Take my situation for example. After testing a piece of software, I have to write a review. With a word processor like Microsoft Word, I can do that the traditional way – by using my fingers to type in text. With a word processor like Dual Writer I don’t have to limit myself to typing – I can also use my voice. I can speak into a microphone and Dual Writer will write down whatever I say.

Dual Writer is compatible with Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1. To use the speech recognition feature you will need a microphone. To get Dual Writer up and running you will need to complete a simple installation process.

The interface is just what you would expect from an application of this type. The text you’re working on is presented front and center on the interface. Buttons for all the features and functions are presented on the ribbon at the top (the ribbon can be minimized). Buttons to change the view mode (simple, draft, print) and to change the zoom level are down in the lower right hand corner.

It must be mentioned that Dual Writer’s interface provides support for skins. These skins are grouped into several categories: Standard, Bonus, Theme.

Dual Writer provides support for DOC, DOCX, TXT, XML, EPUB, and several other formats. You can open a supported file and edit it; or you can create a new file and save it as a supported format. When creating a new file, you can type in text, speak into the microphone and have the application enter the text for you, play with the text formatting, insert images, insert hyperlinks, check your spelling, and more. If you want to, you can select a piece of text and have Dual Writer read it out loud to you.

Dual Writer is not free, it is free to try. You can use the application for free for an evaluation period of 30 days. Whenever you launch Dual Writer, a prompt will tell you how many days are left in your trial.

Speak, type, and read – these are the bits of functionality that are covered by Dual Writer. Speak into the microphone and Dual Writer will write things down. Manually type in text if you want to. Select text and have Dual Writer read it out loud to you.

Pros

Dual Writer is compatible with Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1. The application has a user friendly ribbon interface that provides support for skins. The editing functions you would expect to get from a word processor are covered. There’s a handy speech recognition feature and a handy read aloud feature.

Cons

Trial limitations: nag screen, 30-day trial.
